Green Kitchen Countertops

Green countertops, though not the most popular choice (that award goes to white, a favorite of kitchen designers and homeowners alike), are a great way to make a statement in the kitchen, but in a subtle way. Think green glass countertops, illuminated by LED lighting, or concrete counters set with an array of decorative recycled green glass for a sustainable “green” that also provides a one-of-a-kind appeal.

Perhaps the most luring kitchen improvement is replacing countertops. If you’re replacing your kitchen countertops, it’s smart to go green whether you’re on a tight budget or can afford something luxe. These days, sustainable materials are just as good-looking as traditional countertops like granite or quartz, so making a green choice won’t ding your home’s resale value.

I recently learned that several universities now offer advanced degrees in Environmental Decision Making. I’m not surprised. Even after years of practicing sustainable design, I still find that sussing out the best green products can be challenging. There are many environmental factors to consider, plus there’s a constant barrage of new, better, greener products. So, save for signing up for a postdoctorate program, what’s a guy or gal to do?Sorting through the countless choices of any building material can be made easier with the help of industry-independent organizations who give their approval, or certification, to products that meet the organization’s guidelines for sustainability. For countertops, there are three meaningful certifications I seek:GreenGuard certifies building products for low chemical emissions, which improves indoor air quality.Cradle to Cradle focuses on products that are safe for both people and the planet, and are also designed for a long life cycle. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) ensures that wood products come, in part, from responsibly harvested forests.Be they certified, salvaged or recycled and wood, glass or resin, here are some countertops that get the green light.

Green Kitchen Countertop Option #4: Eco by Cosentino countertops are sold at Lowe’s stores around the country. Containing 75-percent post-consumer or post-industrial raw materials — all at the end of their life cycles — these counters are bound together by corn oil. The company draws from a variety of suppliers to come up with the raw-material mix, so that it includes porcelain, mirror, glass, scraps of stone and corn. Within the ‘Green’ and ‘Revive’ collections are three distinct stylee; the PolarCap style (above), is a stark-white beauty with barely noticeable flecks of gray and black. Yet it’s those flecks that introduce a unique, hand-crafted look.

Rich, espresso-stained wood cabinets provide a dark backdrop to this kitchen’s sunny yellow island. Sustainable materials, like a mosaic backsplash made from reclaimed stained glass, quartz countertops, energy-efficient appliances and low-voltage lighting make this HGTV Green Home kitchen as eco-friendly as it is beautiful.

• Ask friends and family about their kitchen countertops. What do they love or hate about them? • If you’re considering a DIY option, stop and think—do you have the time or the talent? We can all Pin and dream, but can we take those ideas and make them reality? DIY may be cheaper, but be smart and hire someone if you’re not 100% confident in your ability to install it correctly. • Research what the countertop is truly made of. For example, if you choose a concrete kitchen countertop, do you know how much energy it takes to make concrete and how to seal the concrete without using toxic sealants? Is there a more eco-friendly concrete mix available? (There is! Here’s a primer). • Don’t always believe what you read. If a product says “eco-friendly,” do some digging and learn about the company’s sustainability policy. Ask the salesperson how the product is sourced and what makes the material a better choice. Is it green certified? Look for certifications from groups like LEED, the Forest Stewardship Council and GREENGUARD.

Red Hot Kitchen Nothing spices up a rich, gourmet kitchen quite like a playful pop of red. These colorful barstools are the perfect complement to dark wood cabinetry and floors in this Old World-inspired kitchen. Buckminster Green LLC Salvaged WoodYou’ll feel good about your selection and add personality and richness from the wood’s history. I look for wood that has a story — maybe it’s salvaged from some iconographic building or even from the project’s remodel. Just remember, wood is more susceptible to damage by water and heat, so it’s best located away from the sink, dishwasher and range. An island is a good option.Cost: VariesMore about wood countertops for the kitchen and bath

Green Kitchen Countertop Option #3: For a more rustic look, turn to Smith & Fong Plyboo bamboo countertops. Not only is bamboo a 100-percent renewable material, it’s also FSC-certified – and better still the company’s Plyboo is the world’s only formaldehyde-free FSC-certified bamboo. PlybooSquared, shown above, is available in amber, natural, Sahara or Havana shades. To install, use the same materials and fasteners for wood products by either gluing or mechanically fastening.

Green Kitchen Countertop Option #5: Lots of junk mail — ahem, post-consumer recycled paper — is set inside a petroleum-free resin base for PaperStone countertops, from a Washington company. Teh usage of 100-percent post-consumer recycled paper products in the ‘Certified’ line lead these counters to become the only architectural solid surfaces to be certified by the Smartwood program of the Rainforest Alliance to FSC standards.

The walls and countertops may be a cool shade of white, but sometimes the most color, saturation and pattern can lie in a beautiful piece of wood. SPG Architects designed this contemporary kitchen at Casa Torcida around a species of local wood and refined stainless steel elements for a crisp, polished look. When the kitchen requires an extra dose of color, a stunning flower arrangement is all that’s needed. Image courtesy of SPG Architects

Bamboo is often one of the first materials that come to mind when people think of eco-friendly alternatives for anything from flooring to countertops. Bamboo counters are beautiful and practical, thanks to their durability and affordability. It’s also a great choice if you just want to update or add a kitchen island, to keep costs low while also giving the potential for a complete transformation in your kitchen’s look (and mix-and-matching cabinet and island materials is a growing trend).

To suit her clients’ love of eclectic interiors and all things vintage, designer Meg Caswell created this kitchen that has a decidedly whimsical, retro vibe. Fused glass tiles in shades of blue, green and white create a funky backspash while the wall cabinets receive a coat of soft powder blue paint. Meg tops a creamy center island with a glass countertop with just a hint of green, reminiscent of the jadeite pieces collected by the homeowners.
