Compound Materials Flexible Color, Design and Styling Cabinet facings can be made with a variety of compound materials that provide flexibility in color, design and styling, providing another great option for many homes. Here are some types of compound materials to consider when choosing cabinets. PureStyle™ Laminate Detailing options for PureStyle laminate cabinets are endless because of continuous component wrap technology, which eliminates the potential for delamination, peeling or cracking. Each component is individually wrapped, enabling intricate profiles to be designed into the door. Testing has demonstrated PureStyle’s resistance to UV light, aging, moisture, heat damage and staining. Thermofoil Thermofoil is constructed using heat and pressure to bond a thin layer of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) film to a shaped and glued component of medium density fiberboard. The result is a seamless surface that covers a panel’s face and edges. The component back features a white, seamless melamine surface that is excellent for wear and easy cleaning. Thermofoil comes in high-gloss or high-gloss wood grain versions. Eco Veneers Eco Veneers are thinly sliced sheets of solid wood that are applied to a furniture core panel, providing the warmth and beauty of real wood with more consistent grain and color characteristics. Veneers also result in less deforestation of slow-growing species. Acrylic Acrylic is flat laminated on a ¾” engineered core for the face of the door, while the door back consists of a complementary melamine for a consistent appearance. Acrylic cabinets create a contemporary, fashion-forward look. Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) This type of board is formed by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibers. Heat and pressure are used to form a homogenous, medium density fiberboard. This substrate has less variability in it than other wood species, making it excellent for machining and painting. Individual pieces can be machined and assembled much like a wood door. View rooms featuring cabinets in PureStyle Laminate, Thermofoil and Eco Veneer in our inspiration gallery.

Laminate and wood are the two most popular materials used for kitchen cabinets, and they both offer a range of advantages and disadvantages related to price, durability and appearance. In general, laminate kitchen cabinets are chosen for more modern, updated kitchen designs.

As with wood cabinets, laminate kitchen cabinets can be purchased prefabricated, or you can opt for custom or semi-custom designs. Pre-fabrication is the cheapest option, semi-custom is slightly more expensive, and custom laminate cabinets will be the most expensive option.

But the slightly less durable nature of laminate cabinets is often overlooked, because of the final factor: cost. Laminate cabinets are generally significantly less expensive than wood cabinets, making them an attractive option for those looking for a contemporary style and operating on a budget.

In terms of durability, laminate places second to most wood species. If a laminate cabinet is chipped, it can be difficult to repair, sometimes requiring the total replacement of a door or cabinet frame. Also, the glue that holds the layers of laminate material together can become loose over time.

Well, it has been a few weeks since I completed my shiplap bathroom project and I have been loving the new look of my bathroom! With one exception–the vanity. The bathroom did not seem complete with the dated looking vanity and since we aren't ready to replace it, I decided to paint it. Shocker, right 🙂 Rather than use chalk paint like I usually do, I looked into how to paint laminate. Essentially…
