Here are you thinking the table top is too dark and I was going to suggest that you do the top of the hutch dark to match — although you’d have to strip the paint off cuz you can’t stain over paint. I like the idea of one of the posters above – remove the dark area rug and see how it looks. I do think you need something in your dining room to tie-in to the darker wood pieces in your living room since the areas are open to each other. Honestly, I love your table, I think it is absolutely stunning and beautiful with the dark top contrasted with the white base and the white chairs. But of course it’s your home and you have to surround yourself with decor that makes you happiest, not what’s on trend or what anyone else likes! I actually have been thinking about painting the base of my round table a creamy white color, maybe doing the chairs too and lightening up on the upholstery. Your redo is a good inspiration.

You have a lot of choices in paint colors for your dining table redo, but unless you have a funky decorating scheme, stay with something neutral. I like satin black, espresso brown or gloss white. For the bold at heart, choose a daring color for the table or the chairs, or both! For directions on staining or other DIY makeover options, see the DIY projects below these instructions.

Hi Kristy, today as I was driving all over creation in the pouring rain, I kept thinking about cerusing. I just cannot get over the difference it made in your table. I was wondering if it would still be done by hand if it were on a floor. I have to redo my laundry room floor anyway, so I was toying with the idea. The room is aprox 10×12, I just don’t know if it is too big to try. It is such a cool look, can’t imagine how you would open the grain on the floor with out using a machine? Any thoughts?

Dipped furniture is a popular home design trend that works well with kitchen tables and chairs. To try it, paint the bottom half of the legs of your table. Or, try the reverse: Paint most of the table but let the wood peek out on the bottom half of the legs. The dipped look is a great way to introduce a strong color without completely committing to a shade. If you want to get really creative, consider using chalkboard paint on the top of your table. Kids will love having a canvas to scribble on while they wait to eat, and adults will also have fun scribbling messages or reminders on the table too.

If you’re tired of your kitchen table, you don’t need to get rid of it and start from scratch; a few coats of paint can easily turn it into a beautiful new piece. Or if you found a beaten-up kitchen table at a flea market or garage sale, you can create the table of your dreams with just a few coats of paint.

Find a place to work where you don’t have to worry about dust, paint drips and a mess. A garage is ideal. If you have to redo your dining set outside, make sure it is not a windy day to prevent your paint job from being ruined by dust and debris.

In the premiere episode of Shop This Room, host Danielle Colding – winner of HGTV Design Star season 7 – meets David and Rebecca Levitsky in Huntington, NY. They have a bland and dysfunctional kitchen that desperately needs help. Danielle will tackle the kitchen, opening up the space and providing a new layout with a nautical theme inspired by a white vase and beach painting she finds while shopping that captures the homeowners’ personality. Shown in this photo is a detail shot of the DIY refinished dining table and DIY painted chairs from the new kitchen as seen on HGTV’s Shop This Room.

After you’ve finished sanding, you’ll want to cover the table with a primer. If you’re repainting a really old table, try to find a primer that blocks wood stains as well. For added protection, add two coats of primer to the top of the table. Let the primer dry for a full day and then use a medium grit sanding wedge to smooth out any rough patches. For areas that are hard to reach with a roller or paintbrush, try a spray-on primer.

This is inspiring! I wasn’t especially *looking* for a way to update our dining room table, but you’ve sparked a lot of ideas in my mind! Painting the legs black or white and doing something different with the top really appeals to me. I love the idea of the metal top, and also the whitewash. But if one does update a table, I suppose the chairs would also have to be done similarly? Which would be a huge job for us, since there are 12 chairs around our table. So that gives me pause.

I feel the same way about my kitchen table- I actually love the table and not crazy about the chairs. I need to realize it’s ok to change it up. Even though my husband will probably give me “the look” when I tell him I want different chairs, I know I will be much happier when I find what I love. Happy Wife, Happy Life!

Love your table! I have a inexpensive not too old kitchen table like number three ,cherry colored top, dark green bottom. No budget for new. Can you do that treatment on another wood other than oak, with decent results?

If you’re not sure what color to paint your kitchen table, scroll through Pinterest to find ideas. White tables with brightly colored chairs look nice in kitchens, while more striking colors can really make a statement. Decide on the vibe you’re going for in your kitchen and then select a color that helps you achieve that look. Some shades to consider include yellow, red, turquoise and navy blue.

Well I shared my plan with my mom and my MIL who unanimously agreed I should stain the table. They have gorgeous, elegant homes and great taste, so I did it. I stained the table.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Jan! I appreciate your input! The table may be growing on me a tiny bit. I used to have a glass table here before this one, so this one feels like a big black hole to me in comparison. I’m going to live with it for a little while. Paint is a great way to give a piece of furniture a new life, I’d go for it if you want to try something new with your set
