Replacing Kitchen Cabinet Hinges

I decided to paint my kitchen cabinets and replace the old hinges that had been painted over many times before. 20 years ago my father advised, “Don’t take off those hinges!” Now I know why. After multiple trips to the hardware and home stores I found hinges the right size and shape. I removed the doors and hinges, painted the doors, one coat, and replaced the hinges. When I re-hung the doors one out of eight fit.! All the pairs of doors that met in the middle overlapped. Each door would close and fit the latch individually. On one pair of doors I measured the overlap, .5 cm, and moved the hinges that amount. Now neither door will close. Even one of the single hanging doors will not close. I considered planing off the inside edges of the doors but am afraid to try it. Could I use a Dremel tool to trim out the places where the hinges attach? Help! Thanks, Susan

Photo 6: Attach new hinges Attach the self-closing hinges to the doors. Because these doors originally had face-mounted hinges on 3/8-in. inset doors, we used a sharp chisel to make a notch (equal to the hinge thickness) on the inside of the cabinet door so that inset doors would fit into the cabinet opening just as they did before. Install door bumpers inside the lip on the opposite side of the hinges so the door will rest evenly on the cabinet frame. Hinge screws break easily. Use a small self-centering hinge bit to predrill the screw holes for the hinges. The bit should be set to keep you from drilling through the door face. Also, lubricate the screws by dipping them in wax before driving them.

Hinges creak, wear out, discolor or even break over the years. They can also bend. This makes cabinet doors fit poorly. New hinges can update any set of cabinet doors no matter how old they are, and real estate agents often recommend replacing old hardware to help sell your home. Whether you’re moving, doing a remodeling job or your kitchen just needs a bit of TLC, you can change your hinges out in one afternoon. Hinges are designed to fit square on the side of the door, making it simple to get the hinge alignment correct — even if your doors are older than you are.

Replacing your old hinges with a different type of hinge requires a little more work. Your old hinge may leave markings in the cabinet door or on the cabinet frame. When you replace your hinges, you will have to make sure that the new hinges cover up those markings. Otherwise, you will have to repaint or re-stain the cabinet door and frame.

The homeowner has already installed a new tile backsplash, and will also be replacing the floors with new tile and painting the walls once I’m finished with the cabinets. But the homeowner was concerned about the hinges standing out against a light cabinet color. A cabinet refresh is going to help tie the updates together, and when we got to talking about the hinges, I did some research, and found a great local woodworker to help change the hinges from exposed to concealed.

Wow Jenny, you are big time now with that sprayer!!!!! How exciting!!!How costly is it to have the hinges retrofitted inside the cabinets? I wondered about that when I replaced the hinges in my kitchen, they are outside mounted. My new hinges are brushed nickel on white cabs, so not very noticeable, but I kinda feel like exposed black hinges on white make for a very busy look.

To improve the look of your kitchen or bathroom cabinets, consider replacing the hinges and knobs. Trying to paint old hinges doesn’t work very well, so it’s better to replace them with new hinges.

The kind of doors you have will dictate your hinge choice. The doors you see here, very common on older standard cabinets, have a 3/8-in. rabbeted inset with a 3/8-in. overlay (see Photo 2). This type of door makes using a completely concealed hinge problematic, if not impossible. So, I chose face-mounted hinges made for an inset door. To make the face-mounted hinges less obtrusive, I used black lines and black knobs, plus a hinge color that blends with the wood. This method works because the black details draw attention away from the hinges. Face-mounted hinges are available at home centers and lumberyards.

Cabinetmaker Steve Roca replies: Whether you’re hanging new doors, as I’m doing here for a hallway cabinet, or swapping out old hinges, concealed or Euro-style hinges are a dream to install. Unlike the butt or knife hinges often used in kitchen cabinets, they can be adjusted along three axes with the turn of a screwdriver, so you can easily fine-tune the door’s fit.
