“I originally wanted to do a faux marble, but during one trip to the hardware store I saw a quartz countertop sample that was a sparkly black and I decided to try and recreate it. I found some sparkle paint additive at Lowes (the name escapes me, but it was part of their Valspar line). I got a dark charcoal paint and added a good bit of the sparkle dust to give it a shimmer. The countertops are just laminate, so I sanded and cleaned them before priming as well. I gave it 2 coats of the dark paint, and then I sprinkled some shredded iridescent glitter from the craft store into the wet paint, pressing them into it as I went.

5. With your paint brush, apply a coat of paint to the backsplash working from the top down, extending the paint onto the surface of the countertop an inch or two.

6. Begin to roll paint onto the surface of your countertop. Because you painted out from the backsplash a few inches with your brush, you should have a smooth transition and won’t have to worry about getting the roller too close to the backsplash and messing up the finish. Be sure there is a good amount of paint on your roller but don’t worry about complete coverage on your first coat—especially if you are covering a dark counter with a light paint. Roll on long, continual strokes going from the back of the counter all the way down the front ledge. Let dry for an hour before adding another coat.

Rust-Oleum also makes a countertop redo kit, Countertop Transformations, for a textured surface that mimics the feel of stone. The process uses decorative chips rather than paint and is designed to adhere to laminate countertops, although it will also work on hardwood and metal trim. Kits are sold in the $200 range.

It’s a common scenario: This kitchen had perfectly serviceable laminate countertops, but the owner wanted a more luxurious look. Instead of springing for thousands of dollars’ worth of new granite, she opted to try granite-look countertop paint from Giani, which is sold in a kit that covers 35 square feet of surface area for about $70. The paint is designed to cover laminate, solid-surface, ceramic tile, wood or cultured-marble countertops.

My husband extended the countertop in our farmhouse. He left room for a dishwasher. We’re awaiting the new formice for the extended counter top. Since the 2 don’t match, I’m going to paint them for a cohesive look. We’ve already painted the cabinets an country white. Our grand daughter moved in our farmhouse this yr, after graduating high school. We painted the end walls of kitchen Country white & wall behind cabinet a deep red. The oppositie wall from cabinets is also deep red. I’ve yet to get new trim on cabinets & around the ceiling. It’s a work in progress, but we’ve had fun redoing it. My next project is taking laminate wood off of an dresser. I’ve almost got it off. It’s solid wood underneath, so I’m going to stain the top in a dark color & paint the rest white. I’m going to make a vanity for the bathroom out of it. All the wood trim is painted white & it pops with the deep red & country white. I’ll send you photos.
