Kitchen Table Pound Ridge

While a lot of young professionals are drawn to Brooklyn to escape the anonymity of Manhattan and to get engaged in their community, when they’re ready to move out of the city, Pound Ridge offers a similar appeal. “In Brooklyn, we were part of a neighborhood where everyone looked out for one another, and that was comforting to us,” explains Julia Johnson, who recently purchased a landmark house in the historic hamlet along with her husband, Henry, who grew up in town. “Pound Ridge, for us, embodies this same sense of community.” Douglis agrees, “We really felt at home when we visited Pound Ridge, and the warmth of the people was a big draw. Other communities lacked that warmth.”

A morning cup of coffee is much more than just coffee when said cup is at The Kitchen Table. A cheery and sincere greeting can always be expected from the baristas behind the counter. Locals sit at the long bar and greet one another, swap community news and weekend party invites. The Kitchen Table is located in the heart of Scotts Corner, the hub of Pound Ridge, where small shops line the street and shopkeepers wave a familiar hello to passersby.

A successful coffee shop/café can be the root of a community and The Kitchen Table has proven to be just that. Daphne and Robbie Everett, long-time residents of Pound Ridge, thought for years the town was missing a casual coffee shop. In 2014, they changed that with the opening of The Kitchen Table. Fresh baked scones and quiches sit on the counter; breakfasts, such as classic egg and bacon plates, avocado toast, and organic Hudson Valley yogurt parfaits are offered until 3 p.m., a rarity in the county (with the exception of diners). Italian organic Bonjo brand coffee fills steaming cups.

The Kitchen Table in Pound Ridge is only one month old, but it already feels like a locals-only gem. You’ll find mothers with young kids nibbling on Nutella crepes, women sipping cappuccinos and couples grabbing a quick breakfast wrap to start the day. On the run? The Kitchen Table makes smoothies and yogurt cups with granola to go.

Stop by The Kitchen Table in Scotts Corners, and you’ll undoubtedly meet a recent import from Brooklyn Heights or Williamsburg, drawn to the popular café by the best cup of coffee in town. “Brooklynites pride themselves on being adventurous,” says pre-school teacher Erin Joslyn, who together with her husband, Greg, a media-company executive, bought a 1920s farmhouse on Stone Hill Road when he was doing a reverse commute from Brooklyn to Greenwich. “They like to discover the ‘undiscovered’—everything from interesting food to quirky neighborhoods. Pound Ridge fits into this category, in my opinion.”

“We were looking for a down-to-earth community with lots of nature, good schools, good home values, and friendly people,” says Sarah Douglis, a consultant who moved to town this past summer with her husband, Marc Yaggi, the executive director of Waterkeeper Alliance. “Pound Ridge has a more rustic and natural vibe than traditional suburbs, so it is more compelling to lay roots in such a beautiful community.”

“Fifty to sixty years ago, people came up from the city because you could build modern architecture here,” says Ebie Wood, president of the Pound Ridge Historical Society. “They were seeking free expression. The Mad Men, the artists, the Broadway actors, they all came here.”

With great coffee and cheese, cold-pressed juices, two wine stores, a contemporary art gallery, and an indie bookshop as a promising foundation, the newcomers are enthusiastic about the potential for more. “I think the new businesses are a great addition to the town and necessary to keep Brooklyn transplants hooked on living here. Brooklynites are attracted to country living, but they need the stimulation of a thriving Main Street to survive. The renovations in Scotts Corners should help with that,” notes Joslyn, referring to the long-awaited renaissance of the Trinity Corners Shopping Center, soon to be rechristened “Pound Ridge Square.”

Those 20th-century groundbreakers who brought a modern sensibility to Pound Ridge built contemporary homes that blurred the line between indoors and out, encouraging their owners to explore the world in new ways. Jami Greenberg, a music agent and producer, and her husband, Matthew, traded in a three-bedroom coop in Brooklyn Heights earlier this year to embrace that same lifestyle.

Had the Kitchen Table Breakfast. Food was good, not great. I suspect the sauteed mixed greens were actually spinach. The waitress assured me that the food was 'like farm fresh'; not sure if that was a qualifier or if she recently came from California. I know I've been watching too many episodes of 'Restaurant Impossible', but the management is KILLING this place. There are no systems: while part of my breakfast was on the pick up table waiting to be served, I observed the wait staff reading a newspaper, texting, and chatting with their school buddies. Too bad, because I would LOVE to see a healthy cafe in this neck of the woods.

Come weekend nights, The Kitchen Table transforms into a fun tavern, with small bites, craft beers, and wines-by-the-glass. The kitchen does close at 9:30 p.m., but the crowds linger long after, catching up on the day and planning meetups for the weekend.

Love this place! The ambiance is great, the food is wonderful and the service, if not a little slow, is thoughtful and courteous. The menu is fairly standard, but each concoction feels unique to The Kitchen Table. I love the Cuban sandwich on a paper plate. Though it was on the wrong bread, it's obviously a recipe unique to this establishment and tastes great. It made me feel like I was in Key West! Likewise, the BLT is super yummy! Be warned, they close at 3pm.

I've been eyeing this place every time I drive by for months now. The atmosphere is inviting and warm, and you feel like you are eating in your neighbors kitchen We sat at the bar and chatted with employees and locals, and enjoyed The Kitchen Tables Friday Mexican night. Fresh ingredients, and delicious guacamole made the veggie burritos very appetizing. The salad du jour, of arugula, beets and feta was also delicious. If you are looking for a casual, local night out, with fantastic seasonal food, with no fuss- then this is the place to go. I can't wait to go back.
