Next, create a connection between the tile backsplash and the rest of the kitchen by installing tile countertops. Given the small square footage of your kitchen, costs for this addition should remain lower than for an average-sized kitchen. In fact, tiling countertops is a budget-friendly alternative to solid granite or a marble slab. If you choose to add tile to your small kitchen counters, then be mindful of selecting a tile size that balances the scale of your small space. Ironically, when large format tiles are used on a horizontal line, they can make your countertops appear longer.

For starters, you can make a major design statement with a tile backsplash. Though created out of necessity — and generally installed above the stove and from the base of the countertop to the base of the cabinetry — the kitchen backsplash has risen to the role of focal point in many kitchens, depending on the elaborate nature of the designs. Because the backsplash in a small kitchen is a petite canvas, go ahead and bring in some pattern or color drama through tile. Ideas include uniform classics, like subway tile or a geometric herringbone pattern, as well as bold, colorful mosaics or custom-painted murals on tile. If lots of expensive tiles aren’t realistic for your budget, then look at integrating a few of them into your design as accent tiles.

In a small kitchen, many of the extras are eliminated, allowing for decorative, yet hardworking tile to take center stage. Instead of being a one-size-fits-all addition, tile comes in a host of materials, shapes and sizes; choose one that complements the dimensions and style of your kitchen. Popular materials, from ceramic and terra cotta to porcelain, are typically found in square and rectangular shapes. These vary in size from small mosaic-ready tiles to large slabs. Because of this variety, tile is a great vehicle for introducing texture, pattern and color into your kitchen.

Another place to lay tile is the floor. Not only are stone, ceramic and glazed porcelain tile easy surfaces to clean — they’re also extremely durable for a high-traffic kitchen. Consider too the amount of pesky grout lines there are to clean on your tile floors or other surfaces. To this end, the larger the tile, the fewer grout lines there are to contend with.

To liven up a basic backsplash, consider a beveled tile. “Having the tile done this way added a lot of dimension to the walls,” explains designer Tobi Farley. “It adds texture to the neutral kitchen, and the varying shades of bisque and sand complement the Roman shade perfectly. I love working with tile in new and different ways – it can really add to a design!”

Slenderize the Furnishings A small kitchen dictates small-scale furnishings, but take it a step further by choosing a work island, bar chairs, or stools that are visually lightweight, such as this small industrial island. Clean lines don’t distract the eye, and the furniture piece allows you to see the floor and walls beyond, making the room feel larger. Small-Space Kitchen Islands

Elongated Patterns: Choose geometric and striped walls and floors that draw the eye lengthwise or vertically and make the room appear longer or taller than it actually is. Had the checked tile been laid squarely, versus on the diagonal, the floor of Liz & John’s kitchen would have felt more stunted and chopped up. If you can’t change the floor itself, add a patterned runner that will add the same effect.

Face it, in a small space you can’t have a kitchen that is a jack-of-all-trades — accommodating schoolwork, mail, laundry, recipe hunting and cooking duties. Unless you don’t cook at all (in which case, feel free to store your out-of-season clothes in the kitchen cabinets!), the small kitchen’s main chore is meal prep. So focus first on function, making sure you have the appliances and work areas you need. You may be able to save a bit of space by using scaled-down or innovative appliances, including refrigerator and freezer drawers and pint-sized microwaves, stoves (some with just two burners) and single sinks. The function is there, without all the square footage! If workspace is at a premium, consider a small-scale island or a counter-topped cart that can be rolled away into a closet when not in use.

You may not have wide-open spaces in your pint-sized kitchen, but you do have lots of choices. In fact, these choices loom larger in a small space than in today’s basic Taj Mahal-sized kitchen. In a big area you can more easily hide flaws or separate competing styles; in a small space everything really has to work, including the mix of wood and metals and other surface materials. And because your petite kitchen may be short on interesting architectural details, it’s up to you to add the all-important style in compelling countertop surfaces, cabinetry, fixtures, flooring, lighting and color. Is there any place you can add a pleasing curve? Will your granite countertop (more affordable in a small space!) coexist with your cabinet color? Your best bet is to create a mix board with samples and swatches of everything you’re considering. One tip: using the same color and style of fixtures and cabinet pulls can help unify a look.

Another very strong and classic design idea for your kitchen is the modern rustic, farmhouse kitchen – think Shaker style painted cabinets, beautifully exposed beams, deep ceramic Belfast sinks and hearty range cookers. The whole rustic flooring look is very welcoming, comfortable, and feels like it could withstand the wear and tear of family life. This kind of look is perfectly complimented with a terracotta or brick floor tile. Because it is difficult to make perfectly identical terracotta tiles, the inherent variation in tone of the tiles add to the rustic charm and give added texture to your overall design. And as you can see, terracotta tiles come in all sorts of shapes including square, brick, hexagonal or arabesque to add a further dimension to this classic choice.
