Torrent downloading relies on the BitTorrent protocol, a decentralized file-sharing system where each user simultaneously shares what they download. Unlike direct downloads from a single server, the file is split into fragments distributed among all participants in the network. This peer-to-peer (P2P) architecture has been active for over twenty years, but the landscape around it has changed significantly in recent years.

Illegal IPTV vs torrents: a shift confirmed by the numbers

Digital piracy is not disappearing; it is migrating. According to data provided by Arcom and reported by Clubic, traffic to traditional illegal streaming sites has dropped by about 70% in four years. Successive court orders have made access to pirate download and streaming platforms significantly more complicated for French users.

At the same time, illegal IPTV is on the rise. The penetration rate is estimated at 7% of French households, compared to 5% four years earlier. This shift reflects a change in behavior: users now prefer live streams (sports, TV channels) to torrent files that need to be searched for, downloaded, and then played.

To keep up with these daily developments, news on binnews.info regularly covers the twists and turns affecting the world of downloading and P2P.

DNS blocking and VPNs: the new targets of court decisions in France

Until recently, blocking orders targeted internet service providers (ISPs). The Paris judicial court ordered them to make certain domains related to piracy inaccessible. The mechanism was simple: the ISP modified its DNS resolvers to prevent the resolution of the targeted domain name.

This scheme has evolved. In July 2026, 14 decisions from the Paris judicial court imposed blocking obligations directly on public DNS and VPN services. In other words, the circumvention tools themselves are becoming judicial targets.

What this concretely changes for torrent users

An internet user who used an alternative DNS (like those from Cloudflare or Google) to bypass an ISP block could still access torrent sites. With these new orders, this workaround is losing its effectiveness. Public DNS providers may be forced to block the same domains as ISPs.

On the VPN side, the situation is similar. Some VPN providers operating in France are now facing blocking injunctions for sporting events illegally broadcast via IPTV. Ligue 1 and the Champions League have been at the center of these measures.

BitTorrent Protocol: how the file-sharing network works

The BitTorrent protocol is based on a principle of reciprocity. Each user downloading a file simultaneously shares the fragments they have already received with others. A .torrent file or a magnet link contains the metadata necessary to locate other peers on the network.

  • The tracker is a server that connects peers sharing the same file, without hosting the content itself
  • The seeder is a user who has the complete file and continues to share it after the full download
  • The leecher refers to a peer currently downloading, who shares the fragments they have already received but does not yet have the entire file

The download speed directly depends on the number of active seeders. A torrent with few seeders will be slow, or even impossible to complete. That’s why sharing communities emphasize the ratio (amount shared versus amount downloaded).

Security threats in torrent files: the case of fake trapped content

Downloading a file via torrent exposes users to risks that direct downloads do not present in the same way. The lack of centralized control means that anyone can circulate a file named after a popular movie or software, but containing malicious code.

Trapped files appear as legitimate video content but carry malicious code that executes upon opening.

Warning signs to check before opening a file

  • An inconsistent file extension with the announced content (a movie in .exe or .scr instead of .mkv or .mp4)
  • A file whose size does not match the expected format (a high-definition movie that is only a few megabytes)
  • Negative or absent comments on the torrent page, associated with an abnormal seeder/leecher ratio
  • An uploader without history or reputation on the relevant tracker

Private trackers, which require registration and maintain a moderation system, reduce this risk compared to public trackers where anyone can publish content without verification.

Copyright and downloading in France: what the law says

The French legal framework has not fundamentally changed: downloading or sharing content protected by copyright without permission remains illegal. Arcom (formerly Hadopi) manages the graduated response, a system that starts with an email warning and can lead to legal action.

The difference from previous years lies in the scale of the technical means deployed. Arcom has obtained the blocking of over 20,000 sites in total, and a new accelerated blocking system is announced for early 2027. Arcom is no longer limited to traditional video content: sports IPTV streams now account for an increasing share of blocking actions.

The world of downloading and torrents is undergoing a period of reorganization. P2P protocols remain technically functional, but the legal and technical environment surrounding them is tightening. Users who continue to exchange files via BitTorrent do so in a context where the circumvention tools themselves are now targeted by the French judiciary.
